This text is an authored exposition of work with setting events within the methodology of Applied Behavior Analysis: how the morning checklist of a day changes the demands, the reinforcement, and the composition of that day's activities. It is not a normative legal act, a medical prescription, or a substitute for an individual functional assessment and clinical judgement. The exposition fixes a reproducible form of the checklist, of the day's adjustments, and of the caregiver's duties; the composition of the events themselves and the magnitudes of the thresholds must rest on a functional assessment of the individual learner.

The learner goes through the day according to a schedule of activities; the caregiver fills in the morning checklist, applies the day's adjustments, and answers for their execution. A setting event is a circumstance preceding the activities that changes the value of reinforcement and the likelihood of problem behavior, while being neither its immediate occasion nor its consequence. It belongs to the day as a whole rather than to a single activity: in this it differs from an antecedent and from a consequence.

The unit of consideration is one day, and the day is also the case: the date of the day belongs to the legalTime axis and is the only calendar quantity of this exposition. No within-day time is introduced at all — the day's adjustments hold for the whole day. The caregiver's duties are attached to the closed window of that same date, beginning at the date of the day and ending at the declared upper bound of that same date.

The morning checklist holds a closed list of six setting events: short sleep, illness, a missed meal, a change of the usual route, a deterioration of rapport with the caregiver, and bodily discomfort. For each event the checklist asserts exactly one thing: the event is marked, or the event is ruled out. Silence of the checklist replaces neither assertion. A marked event makes the event present for that day.

Completeness of the checklist is asserted by the NUMBER of checked positions rather than by silence: the checklist is complete if the number of checked positions is not below the pinned size of the list, and incomplete otherwise. The size of the list is pinned by an A3 parameter and selected by legalTime. An incomplete checklist leaves the day undetermined: one may not assert "today is an ordinary day" on an incomplete checklist. At the same time an adjustment caused by a MARKED event holds even under an incomplete checklist: a marked event is present regardless of whether the remaining positions have been checked. The difference between "the event is ruled out" and "the position was not checked" is substantive and is not erased in the model.

Short sleep is the only event of the list that has, besides the checklist mark, a measurable ground: the number of hours of sleep reported by the day. Sleep is deemed short if the number of hours is strictly below the threshold pinned by a parameter. The measured ground and the checklist mark lead to one and the same conclusion and do not contend with each other: a day whose hours of sleep are below the threshold has the short-sleep event present even without a mark. The remaining five events have no measurable ground in this version and arrive only by a mark.

A day is called ordinary if the checklist is complete, the number of marked events equals zero, and the reported hours of sleep are not below the threshold of section 6. The third condition is not redundant: the measured ground takes part in this test on a par with the marks, for otherwise a day with six hours of sleep would be at once ordinary and in receipt of three adjustments. A day that reported no hours of sleep at all is likewise not called ordinary — the exposition does not allow calling a day ordinary without knowing how the learner slept. The number of marked events arrives as checklist data rather than as an inference: v1 does not aggregate over an already derived predicate without the completeness barrier of §111. A day whose checklist is incomplete is not called ordinary and remains a day of undetermined state. An ordinary day receives no adjustment; the scheduled activities proceed as assigned.

Demand reduction is assigned to a day in which at least one of three events is present: short sleep, illness, or bodily discomfort. Each ground is a rule of its own: three grounds are not merged into one assertion, because inside a single fact they are indistinguishable to the analysis of blockers. An activity whose demand level exceeds the ceiling pinned for a reduced day exceeds that ceiling on such a day and must be modified or deferred.

Reinforcement enrichment is assigned to a day in which at least one of three events is present: a missed meal, a change of the usual route, or a deterioration of rapport with the caregiver. Each ground is a rule of its own. Reinforcement enrichment neither cancels nor replaces demand reduction: a day in which events of both groups are present receives both adjustments at once.

Freezing new goals is assigned to a day in which at least one of three events is present: short sleep, illness, or bodily discomfort. On such a day an activity declared to be a new instructional goal is deferred; activities on already mastered goals are not deferred. A neutralizing routine is an action provided by the plan that removes the consequences of a particular present event before the activities begin; it is assigned for every present event except short sleep, for which this exposition defines no neutralizing routine. The notion of the neutralizing routine and its effect are described by Horner, Day, and Day (1997).

The schedule of activities of one day is a list of activities, each carrying a demand level and a new-goal marker. One and the same schedule on two different mornings yields different rights of the day: an ordinary day leaves every activity as assigned; a day with a freezing event present defers the activities of new goals; a day with demand reduction singles out the activities above the ceiling. The answer to "why no new goals today" is the analysis of the blockers of the norm that assigns the freeze.

For each day an achievement duty of the caregiver toward the learner arises to fill in the morning checklist within the closed window of the date of the day. For each assigned neutralizing action an achievement duty arises to perform it within the same window. For each deferred activity an achievement duty arises actually to defer it. Performance and its absence are equally reported by the day as explicit facts; after the window closes an explicit non-performance is visible as a violation. The "demand ceiling of the day" calculation returns the pinned ceiling of a reduced day in force on the date of the day. The boundaries of this version are named explicitly: the exposition models neither the accumulation of several consecutive days, nor the strength of an event as a magnitude, nor the interaction of events with one another, nor the functional assessment from which the list of events originates; all of these remain outside the model rather than being declared nonexistent.
