This text is an authored exposition of the experimental functional analysis of problem behavior (FA) in the methodology of Applied Behavior Analysis — the full analysis of Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman, and Richman (1982/1994) and the brief analysis of Northup and colleagues (1991). It is not a normative legal act, a medical prescription, or a substitute for clinical judgment. The exposition fixes a reproducible form of the conditions, of session journaling, of the differentiation criterion, of the contingency reversal, of procedural-fidelity control, and of the sequence of analysis stages; the choice of the target behavior and of the particular establishing operations and consequences of each condition must rest on a preliminary interview and observation of the particular learner.

The learner is the person whose behavior is analyzed; the analyst conducts the sessions, delivers the consequences, and keeps the journal; an assessment (FaAssessment) belongs to exactly one learner and names one observable, operationally defined target behavior whose function the procedure establishes. A condition (Condition) is a closed list of five members: attention (Attention), demand (Demand), alone (Alone), tangible (Tangible), and play (Play). Play is the control condition; the other four are test conditions. Exactly one function is tested by each test condition: attention tests social positive reinforcement by attention, tangible tests social positive reinforcement by an item, demand tests social negative reinforcement by escape from demands, alone tests automatic reinforcement. The tangible condition enters the analysis only when the preliminary interview has named access to an item as a probable function; the assessment reports this as an explicit fact.

The session date belongs to the legalTime axis and is the only calendar quantity of the exposition. Session duration is measured as an integer number of minutes and is not a calendar: minutes are not converted into dates, do not take part in deadline computation, and do not read the calendar. The analyst's duties are bound to the closed window of the session date, beginning on the session date and ending at the declared upper bound of that same date.

A series (Series) is a named collection of sessions of one assessment conducted in one format. A format (Format) is a closed list of three members: brief (Brief), full (Full), and extended alone (ExtendedAlone). A session meets the format length if its duration is not less than the parametric length of the format: for the brief format, the brief-session-minutes parameter; for the full format and for extended alone, the full-session-minutes parameter. A condition is sufficiently sampled in a series if the number of its observed sessions is not less than the parametric minimum number of sessions per condition: for the brief format, the brief-format parameter; for the full format and for extended alone, the full-format parameter. A session shorter than the format length does not count toward the series.

A session has an identity of its own and carries the date, the series, the condition, the analyst, the upper bound of the duty window, the duration in minutes, and the number of episodes of the target behavior. Completeness of the session journal is asserted explicitly: a session is declared either complete or incomplete, and silence of the journal replaces neither assertion. A session is observed if it is declared complete and meets the format length of its series. An incomplete session is unfit for criterion checks. A series carries the assessment and the format; closing of the series is reported by the journal as an explicit fact, and until then the question of the series' differentiation is not decided. The per-condition totals of a series — the number of observed sessions of the condition, the episode total of the condition, and the minute total of the condition — arrive as materialized data of the same journal: v1 does not aggregate over an already derived predicate without the completeness barrier §111. A materialized total is not a clinical claim of its own and must be reproducible from the pinned journal records. The number of sessions of a series is counted directly over the journal records.

For every observed session an achievement duty of the analyst toward the learner arises to deliver the programmed consequence of the condition to every episode of the target behavior within the closed window of the session date; compliance and departure are equally reported by the journal as explicit facts, and after the window closes a departure is visible as a violation. For every session in which the safety threshold is reached an achievement duty arises to terminate the session early within the same window; termination is reported by the journal as an explicit fact. For every session an achievement duty arises to declare the journal complete within the same window. The procedural-fidelity audit consists of enumerating these positions.

The safety threshold is reached in a session if the number of episodes of the target behavior is not less than the parametric episode ceiling. A session with one episode fewer than the ceiling does not reach the threshold. Reaching the threshold neither cancels the session's observability nor excludes it from the series totals: a session terminated early remains a journal datum with its actual duration.

The level of a condition is not computed by division. A condition is elevated over control if its episode total, multiplied by the minute total of the control condition and by one hundred, is strictly greater than the episode total of the control condition, multiplied by the minute total of the condition and by the sum of one hundred and the parametric elevation margin percent. A condition reaches the lower bound if its episode total, multiplied by one hundred, is not less than the parametric minimum level per hundred minutes, multiplied by the minute total of the condition. Both checks require strictly positive minute totals. The control condition is never elevated over itself: comparing a total with itself under a nonzero margin is false. A single session lies above the criterion line if its number of episodes, multiplied by the minute total of the control condition and by one hundred, is strictly greater than the episode total of the control condition, multiplied by the session duration and by the sum of one hundred and the same margin; this statement is a reporting statement and is not part of the differentiation criterion.

A test condition is differentiated in a series if it is elevated over control, reaches the lower bound, and is sufficiently sampled; the tangible condition is differentiated only under the same three requirements and the explicit fact that the interview named access to an item as a probable function. A series is differentiated if at least one test condition is differentiated in it. A closed series in which differentiation has not been derived is undifferentiated: the set of closed series is declared closed, and the absence of a derived differentiation produces an explicit negative read by a strict rule. A differentiated condition of a series names the function of the target behavior by the correspondence of section 2, and the assessment obtains an established function and an identified condition. Brief differentiation and brief non-differentiation of an assessment refer to its brief-format series; full differentiation and full non-differentiation refer to its full-format series.

A contingency reversal is a brief-format session conducted in the identified condition after brief differentiation, in which the analyst reinforces an alternative response of the learner with the same consequence; the journal marks the session as a reversal session and reports the number of alternative responses. The reversal is confirmed if the reversal session is observed, is conducted in the identified condition, its number of episodes multiplied by one hundred does not exceed the parametric reversal level ceiling per hundred minutes multiplied by the session duration, and the number of alternative responses is not less than the parametric alternative-response floor. The reversal failed if the reversal session is observed, is conducted in the identified condition, and its number of episodes multiplied by one hundred is strictly greater than the same product. A confirmed reversal fixes the function of the assessment; a failed reversal requires the full analysis.

An assessment passes through the stages Interview, BriefActive, Reversal, FullActive, ExtendedAlone, and FunctionAssigned. Interview is initial; FunctionAssigned is terminal and means that the function of the target behavior has been established. The transition from Interview to BriefActive is opened by the explicit fact of interview completion. The transition from BriefActive to Reversal is opened by brief differentiation; the transition from BriefActive to FullActive by brief non-differentiation. The transition from Reversal to FunctionAssigned is opened by a confirmed reversal; the transition from Reversal to FullActive by a failed reversal. The transition from FullActive to FunctionAssigned is opened by full differentiation. The transition from FullActive to ExtendedAlone is opened by an indication for extended alone, and the transition from ExtendedAlone to FunctionAssigned by confirmation of the automatic function in the extended-alone series. Out of FullActive under full non-differentiation the base theory opens no transition: that case is decided by a reading of section 12, and without a selected reading the assessment stays in FullActive. There is no exit from FunctionAssigned: a repeated analysis is a new assessment. Both boundaries are declared deliberately.

The exposition acknowledges that a full series closed without differentiation while the level of the control condition is not below the lower bound calls for a decision, and does not settle the dispute about what that decision must be. The first reading takes such a result as sufficient ground to establish the automatic function: high responding in every condition, the control condition included, is read as independence of the behavior from social consequences. The second reading takes such a result as an indication for an extended-alone series: the automatic function is established only when, in the extended-alone series, the alone condition reaches the lower bound and is sufficiently sampled. The readings are declared as named interpretations and deliberately not gathered into a group with mandatory selection: the base theory is silent on the question of undifferentiated high responding, and that silence is an answer, not a gap. The selection of a reading is made by the case context.

The "number of series sessions" calculation returns the number of session records assigned by the journal to the series and is counted directly over the records. The boundaries of this version are named explicitly: the exposition models neither the latency-based analysis (Thomason-Sassi, Iwata, Neidert, and Roscoe, 2011), nor the trial-based analysis in the natural setting, nor the synthesized analysis of Hanley, Jin, Vanselow, and Hanratty (2014), nor the precursor analysis, nor a conclusion of multiple control when several conditions are differentiated at once — each such condition names its function separately; the criterion band of Roane, Fisher, Kelley, Mevers, and Bouxsein (2013), defined by a standard deviation, is replaced by a percent margin over the level of the control condition, and the share of points above the criterion line of Hagopian and colleagues (1997) is moved to the reporting statement of section 8. Everything listed remains outside the model rather than being declared nonexistent. Bibliographic foundations of this authored exposition: Iwata, B. A., Dorsey, M. F., Slifer, K. J., Bauman, K.

Iwata, B. A., Dorsey, M. F., Slifer, K. J., Bauman, K.
