This text is an authored exposition of the base vocabulary of skills, cards, and numeric records of a teaching programme in the methodology of Applied Behavior Analysis. It is not a normative legal act, a medical prescription, a diagnostic instrument, or a substitute for clinical judgment. The exposition states a reproducible form of record keeping: what a skill and a teaching target are, what a card and a session are, what a number in the journal means, when a record is fit to support a conclusion about mastery, and how the conclusion “the skill is not confirmed” is expressed; the choice of particular skills, operational definitions, and teaching procedures for a particular learner is not stated by this exposition and must rest on clinical assessment.

The learner (Learner) is the person acquiring skills; the recorder (Recorder) conducts sessions, registers observations, and pins their semantics. A skill (Skill) is an operationally defined unit of behavior subject to teaching and to record keeping. A teaching target (SkillTarget) belongs to exactly one learner and exactly one skill and is the unit of mastery accounting: statements about mastery are made about a teaching target, not about a skill at large. A teaching target is either open or closed; closing of the target is reported by the journal as an explicit fact, and until then the question of confirming the target is not decided. A teaching target is fully supplied if the journal has named both its learner and its skill and both are supplied to the case; an incompletely supplied teaching target is not confirmed regardless of the records.

The session date belongs to the legalTime axis and is the only calendar quantity of the exposition. Counts of trials, correct responses, independent responses, sessions, and cards are measured by whole numbers and are not a calendar: they are not converted into dates, take no part in computing deadlines, and read no calendar. The duties of the recorder are attached to a closed window of the session date, beginning on the session date and ending at the declared upper bound of the same date.

A card (Card) is an identifiable unit of presented material shown to the learner and assigned by the journal to exactly one skill of the vocabulary. A skill of the vocabulary is represented by a card if the journal has assigned at least one card to it; the number of cards of a skill is counted directly over the journal records. A session (Session) is an identifiable dated lesson with the learner conducted by the recorder. A record (Record) is an identifiable numeric observation assigned by the journal to a session, to a teaching target, and to a whole-number value; the number of records of a session is counted directly over the journal records. A card, a session, a record, and a teaching target each have an identity of their own and are not structural values: the case refers to each of them as an entity.

Record semantics (RecordSemantics) is a closed enumeration of five members: trial count (TrialCount), correct-response count (CorrectCount), independent-response count (IndependentCount), session count (SessionCount), and raw value (RawValue). A number in the journal is not by itself an assertion: one and the same value “eight” means eight trials, eight correct responses, eight independent responses, eight sessions, or eight units of an unnamed quantity, and only the pinned semantics of the record tells these assertions apart. None of the five types is derived from another: the enumeration is closed, and the difference of two of its members is not expressible inside a rule body, so assertions about types are written one per type and one per pair of types.

The semantics of a record is pinned by an explicit fact of the journal, and the record-to-type relation has the record itself as its key: two different types for one record are a key conflict, and the journal declares it loudly rather than choosing between them. A record to which the journal has ascribed two different semantic types is ambiguous; ambiguity is derived separately for each pair of different types. A record has pinned semantics if the journal has ascribed at least one type to it. The set of supplied records is declared closed with respect to ambiguity and to pinning: an underived ambiguity yields an explicit negative, and a record with pinned semantics for which no ambiguity is derived has unique semantics; an underived pinning yields an explicit negative, and a record without an ascribed type has no semantics. Both verdicts are reporting ones and take no part in checking the mastery criteria: the criteria read pinning, while ambiguity is cut off by the key conflict at the input rather than by inference.

The completeness of the session journal is asserted explicitly: the session is declared either complete or incomplete, and the silence of the journal replaces neither of these assertions. A record of a complete session that has pinned semantics is observed. A record of an incomplete session is unfit for checking mastery criteria, and its unfitness is a derived assertion rather than silence.

The independence share is not computed by division. A record reaches the independence threshold if its value multiplied by one hundred is not less than the parametric independence threshold in percent multiplied by the trial count of the same session for the same teaching target. The check requires a strictly positive trial count. The trial count of a session for a teaching target arrives as a journal record of that semantic type and is a record in its own right, not a property of the record being checked. A session whose trial count is below the parametric minimum trial count of a record supplies no evidence of mastery regardless of the share attained.

A record is evidence of mastery if it is observed, its pinned semantics is the independent-response count, the trial count of the same session for the same target is not below the parametric minimum trial count of a record, and the record reaches the independence threshold. Records of the other four semantic types are not evidence of mastery: the trial count, the correct-response count, the session count, and the raw value are accounting data from which this exposition derives no conclusion about mastery. The set of supplied records is declared closed with respect to evidence of mastery: a record for which evidence is not derived receives an explicit negative, and the assertion “the record supplies no evidence of mastery” is derived rather than the silence of the journal.

A teaching target is confirmed if the journal has materialized the number of its evidence records as not less than the parametric minimum number of confirming records and at least one record assigned to the target is evidence of mastery. The materialized number arrives as data of the same journal: the count of evidence records is a count over an already derived predicate, and the exposition does not aggregate over a derived predicate without a completeness barrier. The materialized number is not a clinical assertion of its own and must be reproducible from the pinned records of the journal; a divergence of the materialized number from the records is a defect of the journal, not a change of the conclusion.

The set of closed teaching targets is declared closed: a closed target for which confirmation is not derived is unconfirmed, and the absence of a derived confirmation yields an explicit negative read by a strict rule. An unconfirmed target means neither an absence of teaching nor an absence of progress: it means exactly that the pinned records of the journal supply no conclusion about mastery. An open teaching target is not unconfirmed: until the target is closed the question is not decided at all.

For every record of a supplied session there arises an achievement duty of the recorder toward the learner to pin the semantics of the record within the closed window of the session date; pinning and departure are alike reported by the journal as explicit facts, and after the window closes a departure is visible as a violation. For every session there arises an achievement duty to declare the session journal complete within the same window. The audit of record keeping consists in enumerating these positions.

The exposition acknowledges that a raw value about which the journal has declared, by an explicit fact, that its unit is the independence share in percent requires a decision, and it does not settle the dispute about what that decision should be. An observed raw value with a declared unit, reaching the independence threshold with a sufficient trial count, is a reporting assertion of the base theory and by itself yields no confirmation of the target under section 10. A teaching target is confirmed with account of the raw value if it is confirmed under section 10, or if an accepted raw-value record is assigned to it while the materialized number of evidence records is not below the parametric minimum number of confirming records. The readings diverge on which raw-value record is accepted. The first reading accepts every reporting raw value, treating it as equivalent to a record of independent responses. The second reading accepts it only when the journal has assigned to the same teaching target at least one record with the typed semantics of the independent-response count. The readings are declared as named interpretations and are deliberately not gathered into a group with a mandatory choice: the base theory is silent on the question of accepting a raw value, and that silence is an answer, not a gap. The choice of a reading is made by the context of the case.

The calculations “number of cards of a skill” and “number of records of a session” return the number of journal records assigned to the skill and to the session respectively and are counted directly. The boundaries of this version are stated explicitly: the exposition models neither interobserver agreement and its estimates (Hartmann, 1977), nor discontinuous interval recording methods and momentary time sampling (Meany-Daboul, Roscoe, Bourret, & Ahearn, 2007; Fiske & Delmolino, 2012), nor the selection of a measurement procedure by response class (LeBlanc, Raetz, Sellers, & Carr, 2015), nor fluency as a measure of its own, nor maintenance and generalization of a skill beyond the mastery criterion (Fuller & Fienup, 2017; Richling, Williams, & Carr, 2019; Pitts & Hoerger, 2021), nor derived stimulus relations and their testing (Sidman & Tailby, 1982; Rehfeldt, 2011). All of the listed remains outside the model rather than being declared nonexistent; the numeric values of the parameters of the exposition are authored working quantities and are not constants of the literature listed. Named as a boundary of this version is also that the inference order of the exposition is single-level with respect to closures: a section 70 closure does not read the explicit negatives of another closure, so the uniqueness-of-semantics verdict is a reporting one, while the mastery criteria read pinning and rest on the key conflict.
